Marshawn Lynch runs for TD in Raiders' 45-20 win over Jets

Marshawn Lynch's Oakland homecoming turned into a dance party .
Lynch celebrated his first home game for his hometown team by running for a touchdown and delighting the fans with a lengthy sideline dance in the fourth quarter of the Raiders 45-20 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday.
"That's Marshawn being Marshawn, playing for his hometown team," left tackle Donald Penn said. "If you grow up as a kid and grow up rooting for a team and then you get to play for them, wouldn't that be a dream? I'm just happy for him. He's living a childhood dream."
Lynch ran for 45 yards on 12 carries, scoring on a 2-yard run late in the first half. He kept the ball and said after the game he plans to give it to his mother. He then generated perhaps even bigger cheers during a sideline dance that was shown on the videoboard during a stoppage in the fourth quarter, prompting cheers of "Beast Mode! Beast Mode!"
"It got me fired up," coach Jack Del Rio said. "You can see the pure passion that he has. These are his people. These are my people. He played well. I know he was really happy to have his first game go like that."
Moments like these were why Lynch decided to come out of retirement this offseason. He made his decision after the Raiders announced plans to move to Las Vegas in 2020. Lynch said he wanted to give something back to his hometown fans and he delivered in a big way.
He was greeted with loud cheers in pregame introductions and that continued throughout the game.
His teammates provided many more things to cheer. Derek Carr threw three touchdown passes to Michael Crabtree, and Cordarrelle Patterson and Jalen Richard each added long touchdown runs to help give the Raiders (2-0) wins in the opening two games of the season for the first time since their AFC championship season in 2002.
Josh McCown threw a pair of TD passes to Jermaine Kearse , but the Jets (0-2) proved to be no match for the more powerful and talented Raiders.
The Raiders vaunted offensive line won the matchup against New York's front four , allowing no sacks and helping clear holes for a 180-yard rushing performance.
"As a defense, our job is to stop the run," defensive tackle Kony Ealy said. "It's very frustrating to do that. Nobody to blame but ourselves. We've got to look in the mirror and stop that problem ourselves."
Oakland wore down the Jets and got a 43-yard touchdown run by Patterson late in the third quarter and a 52-yarder by Richard early in the fourth that made it 35-13.
CARR TO CRAB: Carr and Crabtree were in sync all game. With the Jets looking for a run from Lynch from the 2 in the first quarter, Carr found Crabtree on a fade for a TD . The two connected again on a 26-yard score in the second quarter and then a 1-yarder in the fourth quarter that made it 42-13.
MOMENTUM SHIFT: After falling behind 14-0, the Jets got back into the game and were set to take possession late in the first half trailing by only four. But Kalif Raymond dropped a punt that Johnny Holton recovered for Oakland at the 4. Three plays later, Lynch ran it in from the 2 to make it 21-10 at the half.
"You've got a job to do, then you've got to go back there and do it," Raymond said. "I think it was a big change in the game. It's definitely one I wish I could have back."
FLAG DAY: The Raiders were a little overaggressive. They committed three unnecessary roughness penalties and one unsportsmanlike conduct foul in the first half, helping extend the drives that led to 10 points for the Jets. The culprits were Lee SmithJon FelicianoBruce Irvin and Marquel Lee.
INJURIES: With their top two tight ends Eric Tomlinson and Jordan Leggett out with injuries, the Jets often used six or even seven lineman to make up for their absence. ... New York G Brian Winters (abdomen) and LB Freddie Bishop (ankle) were hurt during the game. ... Raiders CB Sean Smith was out with a neck injury, giving rookie Gareon Conley lots of playing time in his debut.

Bills open McDermott's coaching era with 21-12 win over Jets

Tyrod Taylor threw two touchdown passes and the new-look Bills beat the New York Jets 21-12 on Sunday in Sean McDermott's debut as Buffalo's coach.
Mike Tolbert also scored on a 1-yard run , while Buffalo's defense had three interceptions, including linebacker Ramon Humber picking off Josh McCown's pass to thwart a 2-point conversion in the third quarter.
Safety Micah Hyde, a free agent offseason addition, sealed the victory by intercepting McCown at Buffalo's 41 to end the Jets' final series.
Taylor was 16 of 28 for 224 yards and an interception.
The Bills never trailed after opening the scoring on Taylor's 1-yard touchdown pass to Charles Clay 3 1/2 minutes into the second quarter.
The victory came in McDermott's first game since the former Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator took over in January after Rex Ryan was fired in the final week of last season.
The Jets looked much like a team in the midst of a makeover after making numerous offseason moves to purge talent.
McCown went 26 of 39 for 187 yards. The 38-year-old quarterback opened his 15th NFL season by extending his personal losing streak to eight games dating to Oct. 11, 2015, when he led Cleveland to a 33-30 win over Baltimore. McCown is now 1-17 in his last 18 starts.
McCown scored New York's lone touchdown on a 1-yard run to briefly cut Buffalo's lead to 14-12 with two minutes left in the third quarter.
The Bills responded on their next possession with a nine-play 80-yard drive capped by Tolbert's touchdown.
Buffalo negated the Jets' strength by limiting New York's running back tandem of Matt Forte and Bilal Powell to a combined 38 yards rushing.
Jordan Poyer also intercepted a pass from McCown by ripping it out of the hands of receiver Robby Andersonat Buffalo's 22 with 6:33 left.
The game was sloppy at times and a reflection of two AFC East teams opening with lowered expectations and coming off major offseason overhauls.
Buffalo squandered two scoring opportunities in the first half. Taylor's pass to Charles Clay in the end zone glanced off the tight end's hands and was intercepted by Juston Burris. The cornerback returned it 48 yards, and went down when he bumped into his teammate. Burris then fumbled, but was ruled down by contact, as he had a knee down when hit from behind by Bills center Eric Wood.
Newly acquired kicker Stephen Hauschka also missed a 46-yard attempt wide left.
The Jets, meanwhile, managed just four first downs and 85 yards offense in the first half in settling for a pair of field goals by Chandler Catanzaro, including a 52-yarder.
INACTIVES
Jets: Jeremy Kerley will have to wait to mark his return with New York. Kerley re-signed with the Jets on Tuesday after being cut by the San Francisco 49ers. With QB Bryce Petty still nursing a knee injury, Christian Hackenberg served as the backup.
Bills: Backup DE Jerel Worthy did not play as he is still recovering from a concussion sustained in Buffalo's preseason finale.
DEBUTS
Jets: WR Jermaine Kearse, acquired in a deal that sent DL Sheldon Richardson to Seattle 10 days ago, had seven catches for 59 yards. Waiver-claim addition Kony Ealy knocked away two passes.
Bills: WR Jordan Matthews, acquired in a trade that sent CB Ronald Darby to Philadelphia last month, had two receptions for a team-best 61 yards.
INJURIES
Jets: TE Eric Tomlinson did not return after hurting an elbow in the second quarter.
Bills: CB E.J. Gaines did not return after hurting his left shoulder while assisting Lorenzo White in tackling Bilal Powell on an 11-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

Fitzpatrick solid in relief in Jets' 24-16 win over Ravens

Fitz Magic returned afterGeno Smith's sequel ended early, and the New York Jets got their first victory in over a month.
Fitzpatrick replaced an injured Smith and led the Jets on three scoring drives, and a rejuvenated defense came up with two rare interceptions in a 24-16 comeback victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday that snapped a four-game skid.
"It's a pretty ironic situation," Fitzpatrick said.
Fitzpatrick came in for Smith, starting for the first time since 2014, in the second quarter and led the Jets on a go-ahead drive capped by a 13-yard touchdown catch by Matt Forte. Fitzpatrick finished 9 of 14 for 120 yards and a touchdown for the Jets (2-5), whose last win came at Buffalo on Sept. 15.
"It's about damn time," safety Calvin Pryor said.
Smith injured his right knee while taking a sack from Baltimore's Matthew Judon and will have an MRI to determine if he needs to be sidelined. Center Nick Mangold (knee) and linebacker Bruce Carter (hamstring) were also injured.
Fitzpatrick was efficient after losing his job earlier in the week. Coach Todd Bowles decided to start Smith over Fitzpatrick , who had thrown an NFL-leading 11 interceptions and just five touchdown passes. Smith was 4 of 8 for 95 yards and a TD to Quincy Enunwa.
Justin Tucker put the Ravens (3-4) back up 16-14 as time expired in the first half with his third field goal, a 44-yarder.
Joe Flacco started for Baltimore after being questionable with a sore shoulder . He went a team-record 176 consecutive throws without an interception before Buster Skrine picked off his pass in the third quarter and returned it 51 yards to the Ravens 3.
But the Jets faltered and had to settle for Nick Folk's 22-yard field goal and a 17-16 lead.
The defense made it two possessions in a row with a takeaway - after coming in with just four all season - asMarcus Gilchrist picked off Flacco and returned it 27 yards to the Ravens 24.
This time, the Jets cashed in, but not before some hot potato with the football.
On second-and-goal from the 6, Forte ran up the middle for 3 yards and had the ball ripped out of his hands.Timmy Jernigan recovered for Baltimore and tried to advance, but Brandon Marshall stripped the ball and recovered it for the Jets.
"At the end of the day, coach says the best thing for me to do was to fall on the ball," Jernigan said. "From now on, I'm going to fall on the ball."
Three plays later, Forte ran it in from 1 yard.
Forte finished with 100 yards and a TD on 30 carries and four catches for 54 yards and a score. He also joined Marshall Faulk, Marcus Allen, Thurman Thomas and Herschel Walker as the only players with 8,000 yards rushing, 4,000 yards receiving and 20 TD receptions. With 3:04 left, Folk had a chance to seal the victory, but his 51-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Brandon Williams.
Again, the Jets' defense came up big, with Marcus Williams knocking away Flacco's desperation heave as the Ravens dropped their fourth straight - and second in a row at MetLife Stadium after losing 27-23 to the Giants last week .
Flacco was 25 of 44 for 248 yards and the two interceptions.
"Right now, it's us versus ourselves," Brandon Williams said. "We've got to look within ourselves and look at each other and fix the stupid stuff."
SMITH'S QUICK START
Enunwa motored down the left sideline and outran two Ravens for a 69-yard touchdown in the first quarter. An excited Smith ran all the way down the field to celebrate with Enunwa as fireworks went off at MetLife Stadium.
It was Smith's first touchdown pass since Week 8 of last season at Oakland, when he stepped in for an injured Fitzpatrick. It was also Smith's first start since the 2014 season finale at Miami.
WHOOPS
Baltimore took a 7-0 lead when rookie Lachlan Edwards, punting on the Jets' first offensive series, had the snap go through his hands. Edwards couldn't corral the football as Moore recovered and ran it in for 2 yards.
TOUGH SLEDDING
After giving up 171 yards rushing, including 111 to David Johnson, at Arizona, the Jets held Baltimore to a franchise-low 6 yards on the ground.
Terrance West, who came in having rushed for 295 yards in his last three games, finished with 10 yards on eight carries.
BANGED-UP RAVENS
The Ravens had several starters sitting out: linebackers Terrell Suggs (biceps), Elvis Dumervil (foot), C.J. Mosley (thigh), wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. (ankle), cornerback Shareece Wright (thigh), guard Marshal Yanda (shoulder) and left tackle Ronnie Stanley (foot).
BYRD HONORED
The Jets honored the late Dennis Byrd with a pregame video tribute after he was killed last weekend in a car accident in Oklahoma.
Byrd was an inspiration to many after he overcame brief paralysis and walked again just a few months after injuring his neck during a play in 1992. The defensive lineman, who played for the Jets for four seasons, died in a two-vehicle collision last Saturday. He was 50.

Johnson, Cardinals roll past listless Jets 28-3

Stopping the run was one of the few things the New York Jets had done well this season.
Until they faced David Johnson and the Arizona Cardinals.
Johnson rushed for 111 yards and three touchdowns, and the Cardinals shut down the listless Jets 28-3 on Monday night.
Johnson scored on runs of 58, 2 and 2 yards while becoming the first player to rush for three scores against the Jets since LeSean McCoy did it five years ago.
"I say it each and every week. David's special," Arizona cornerback Patrick Peterson said. "I mean very, very, very special. We got us one in (No.) 31."
The Cardinals (3-3) won their second in a row to climb back to .500. New York (1-5) lost its fourth straight in a rough return to Arizona for Todd Bowles, who was defensive coordinator for the Cardinals for two seasons before getting the Jets coaching job two years ago.
"We've won two in a row," Arizona coach Bruce Arians said. "We're still just a .500 ballclub, but I like the way we look right now."
Arians took no great joy in beating Bowles. Their connection goes back to their days together at Temple three decades ago.
"I'm glad it's over," Arians said.
The Jets' Ryan Fitzpatrick was 16 of 31 for 174 yards and was benched in favor of Geno Smith after New York's longest drive of the night ended in an interception in the end zone late in the third quarter.
"As an offense we are just not consistent right now and the offense goes as the quarterback goes," Fitzpatrick said. "I have got to play better."
Smith's lone series at quarterback ended when he was intercepted by Tyrann Mathieu with 4:20 to play.
"The game was 28-3 with eight minutes left in the game," Bowles said. "We weren't doing anything else. I just wanted to give him some reps. Like a relief pitcher, a starting pitcher, on this day you put in the relief pitcher. Fitz will be (the starter) next week."
Arizona's Carson Palmer , back after missing a 33-21 win at San Francisco with a concussion, completed 23 of 34 passes for 213 yards before leaving with a hamstring strain after throwing a 9-yard TD pass to Michael Floyd with 8:20 remaining.
Arizona scored in the first quarter for the first time this season on the second time Johnson touched the ball.
"Our coach has been harping on us about that," Johnson said. "It felt good to get in the end zone. I felt like that's actually what started everyone getting hyped, everyone getting into the game."
The second-year running back dodged a pair of defenders near the line of scrimmage, and then raced to the end zone on his longest run of the season. Johnson also rushed for 157 yards in the win against the 49ers, winning NFC offensive player of the week honors.
The Jets entered the game second in the NFL in rushing defense at 68 yards per game. They were outgained on the ground 171-33.
New York had 130 yards in the first half, 70 on three receptions by Brandon Marshall . Marshall's 36-yard catch over the middle set up New York's only score, Nick Folk's' 39-yard field goal.
Arizona scored on a pair of 14-play drives in the second half. Johnson got his second 2-yard TD run up the middle, and Palmer passed to Floyd for another TD.
The Jets drove to the Cardinals 14 late in the third quarter but D.J. Swearinger intercepted Fitzpatrick's pass in the end zone to end the threat. It was Fitzpatrick's league-worst 11th interception of the season.
But Marshall said the interception was his fault.
"I read it wrong, Ryan read it right," he said. "He threw a pick, but it's my pick. I've said it all along this season, interceptions are on everyone."
THIRD DOWN WOES
The Jets were 2 for 13 on third-down conversions. They were 0 for 8 before converting one during their long third-quarter drive.
PENALTIES GALORE
There were 19 penalties in the sloppy game - 10 against New York, nine against Arizona.

Roethlisberger throws for 4 TDs, Steelers blow by Jets 31-13

Gaining Ben Roethlisberger's trust can be a difficult process for any new Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver. Once it's earned, however, it's unshakeable.
Drops. Busted routes. Mental miscues. Roethlisberger can live with the mistakes as a receiver finds his way, particularly when the highs like the ones Sammie Coatesprovided in Pittsburgh's clinical 31-13 win over the New York Jets on Sunday are so giddy.
Coates sandwiched a pair of touchdown receptions around a very visible case of nerves as the Steelers (4-1) pulled away from the Jets (1-4) in the second half. The second-year wide receiver hauled in a 72-yard catch-and-run for a score on Pittsburgh's first possession and cradled a 5-yard score late in the fourth quarter. In between were a handful of grabs of varying difficulty Coates couldn't quite corral and a cut on his left hand that required stitches.
Yet Roethlisberger kept coming back to Coates again and again.
"He hurts as bad as anybody when he drops a ball," Roethlisberger said. "But I want him to know ... I'm going to come back to you. I believe in you. I believe in everybody on this team and he showed why I have that faith in him."
Coates finished with six receptions for a career-high 139 yards and the two scores. He is averaging 23.2 yards per reception this season and is just the second player in team history with a 40-yard reception in five straight games while becoming the deep threat the Steelers needed with Martavis Bryant serving a yearlong suspension for violating the league's drug policy. Not that Coates is ready to relax. As gaudy as his numbers were, he knows they could have been even better.
"I still left a lot on the field," he said. "I'll worry about what I left on the field and work on that grow from that, not what I've done because that's part of my game, that's what I'm supposed to do."
Ben Roethlisberger finished with 380 yards passing and four touchdowns against a New York defense missing star cornerback Darrelle Revis . Running back Le'Veon Bell added 158 yards of total offense, including a career-high nine receptions. Roethlisberger's 15 touchdowns through Pittsburgh's first five games are a club record. He did it on Sunday behind an offensive line that didn't miss a step with right tackle Marcus Gilbertsidelined. Roethlisberger was sacked just once and rarely pressured while dropping back 48 times.
"Our guys were just phenomenal," Roethlisberger said. "They are the catalyst for us. They drive us."
NO REGRETS
New York's Ryan Fitzpatrick avoided the interceptions that have plagued him this season, completing 25 of 38 for 265 yards and a touchdown to Brandon Marshall. Yet the Jets also mustered little offense in the second half and couldn't keep up as the Steelers put together clinical scoring drive after clinical scoring drive.
New York also punted twice in the fourth quarter while down 11, once on fourth-and-1 at its 34 and again on fourth-and-2 at midfield, though coach Todd Bowles believes he made the right call both times. Pittsburgh finally put New York away following the second kick, going 79 yards in 12 plays to improve to 10-1 all-time at home against New York.
"Time travel doesn't work in life," Bowles said. "It was a mistake if you look at it that way."
Marshall, who finished with eight receptions for 114 yards, wasn't in the mood to second-guess his coach.
"We have a good defense with star players on it and (Bowles) thought we could get a stop," he said. "It didn't work out the way we wanted, but you can't fault him for the decisions."
DE-CLEATED
Brown planned to wear cleats honoring boxing great Muhammad Ali, just as he did the week before in cleats that featured a sketch of golfer Arnold Palmer. Brown was told before the kickoff he needed to switch shoes or face a fine.
"I thought I was OK but it turned out I wasn't," he said. "I made an adjustment."
Brown also toned down his hip-gyrating (and fine inducing) TD celebrations, opting to simply hand the ball to a fan after catching a 5-yard score in the fourth quarter.
"Wasn't time to really put the pumps in," Brown said. "Got to save them for when it's a great moment."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Jets: Linebacker David Harris (hamstring), center Nick Mangold (knee), cornerback Darryl Roberts (shoulder) left and did not return.
Steelers: Defensive end Cam Heyward, whose three sacks lead the team, underwent an MRI on his hamstring after leaving in the first half. Heyward indicated afterward he miss time.

Wilson sharp, throws 3 TDs in Seahawks' 27-17 win over Jets

Russell Wilson's efficient arm certainly made up for his banged-up knee.
The Seattle quarterback was sharp despite playing with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee , throwing three touchdown passes in the Seahawks' 27-17 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday.
"I thought it was a sterling effort by the quarterback," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. "Everybody was wondering and questioning what was going to happen and how he would be able to do it. He just did it. This is the best he's looked in the last few weeks."
Wilson was injured last week against San Francisco and wasn't his usual mobile self in this one, but finished 23 of 32 for 309 yards while wearing a brace on his leg as the Seahawks (3-1) won at MetLife Stadium for the first time since beating the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl in 2014.
"Feeling great," said Wilson, who was sacked twice. "I thought the offensive line did a phenomenal job. They protected really well."
Jimmy Graham, questionable with back spasms earlier in the week, had six catches for 113 yards, including an impressive 17-yard one-handed grab in the opening quarter, while giving the Jets (1-3) fits all game.
"He's a bad, bad man," Wilson said. "He can do anything. He can make any play, any catch. He's a special player."
Added Carroll: "He's just a monster out there."
Wilson, who has also dealt with a sprained right ankle from the opener against Miami, went 10 of 11 for 191 yards and two TDs and a perfect 158.3 quarterback rating in the first half. He finished with minus-5 yards on five rushes for Seattle, which has a bye next weekend.
Wilson helped Seattle, making the first of three East Coast trips this season, improve to 8-5 in its last 13 games with a 1 p.m. Eastern start time.
Richard Sherman had two interceptions and Earl Thomas one as Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets couldn't get much going against the NFL's No. 1-ranked defense.
Fitzpatrick, coming off a six-interception performance at Kansas City , was 23 of 41 for 261 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall. The Jets were without receiver Eric Decker , who's week to week with a partially torn right rotator cuff.
"We've beaten ourselves two weeks in a row," coach Todd Bowles said, "and we've got to fix that."
Marshall bristled a bit when asked if he thought the Jets need to evaluate the quarterback position.
"I am. Going down. In a boat. With Ryan Fitzpatrick," Marshall said, measuring his words. "OK?"
Marshall's first touchdown catch of the season on a back-shoulder throw to the front-left corner of the end zone over Sherman cut the deficit to four at 14-10 with 13 seconds left in the opening half. Seattle took advantage of an interception by Sherman at the start of the fourth quarter. Wilson found Graham for 24 yards - a catch challenged by the Jets but upheld by review - and then connected with Paul Richardson for 27 yards to make it first-and-goal from the 6.
On the next play, Wilson rolled to his right and lofted a pass to Christine Michael, who reached over the pylon to make it 24-10.
FLUKEY FIRST TD: Rookie Charone Peake scored his first NFL touchdown when Fitzpatrick was sacked byCliff Avril and fumbled, but the receiver picked up the ball and zipped 42 yards into the end zone with 2:15 left that made it 27-17.
MEMORABLE GRAB: Tanner McEvoy's first NFL catch was one for the trophy case as he was wide open downfield when Wilson hit him for a 42-yard touchdown that put the Seahawks up 14-3. McEvoy, a New Jersey native, was an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin.
QUICK IMPACT: C.J. Spiller, who signed with the Seahawks earlier in the week , made his first big play for Seattle with an 8-yard touchdown catch early in the second quarter. Spiller had worked out for the Jets before he signed with the Seahawks, and made New York pay for not signing him, giving Seattle a 7-3 lead.
"That was the cherry on top," Spiller said. "It's been a crazy week."
The drive was highlighted by a 27-yard catch by Graham and a 37-yard grab by Doug Baldwin, who held onto the ball despite taking a huge hit from Calvin Pryor, who was flagged for unnecessary roughness, putting the ball at the Jets 5.
IFEDI'S DEBUT: Seattle guard Germain Ifedi, the 31st overall pick in the draft, made his regular-season debut. Ifedi missed the first three games (ankle), but started at right guard after going through a full week of practice.
INJURIES: Baldwin came out briefly early in the second quarter after taking the hit from Pryor. He returned later in the quarter. ... Bowles said Jets CB Darrelle Revis has a hamstring injury, although it was initially announced as a thigh injury. ... RG Brian Winters left in the second quarter with a concussion after he banged helmets with a Seahawks defender - and was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty. He was replaced by Brent Qvale, who had started at RT.

Chiefs get 8 turnovers, take 2 for TDs in 24-3 win over Jets

Derrick Johnson saw everybody else picking off passes for Kansas City and decided to join the party.
Then he figured he might as well score, too.
The veteran linebacker snagged one of six interceptions thrown by Ryan Fitzpatrick, scored one of the Chiefs' two touchdowns off turnovers, and put an exclamation mark on a rather bizarre 24-3 victory over the hapless, turnover-prone New York Jets on Sunday.
"We put an emphasis on taking away the ball all the time," said Johnson, who scored his fourth career TD. "If you can get a turnover, it's a big momentum changer. And if you can score, it's even bigger."
A turnover? How about get eight.
Marcus Peters had two of the interceptions for the Chiefs (2-1), including the first of four in the fourth quarter. Johnson, Daniel Sorenson and D.J. White grabbed the others as the Jets piled up their most turnovers since setting a franchise record with 10 in a loss to the Patriots on Nov. 21, 1976.
"I'm stunned, disappointed ... mad," Jets coach Todd Bowles said. "We could have come out prepared. We could have come out and executed better. There's 50 million things when you lose and we lost. Pick any one of them."
Alex Smith was 25 of 33 for 237 yards and a touchdown for Kansas City, while Spencer Ware added 75 yards rushing. But it was the performance of the defense - and all those Jets turnovers - that helped the Chiefs bounced back from their first regular-season defeat in 12 games.
Eric Berry picked off a pass in the end zone late in the third quarter, and a fumbled kick return by the Jets' Jalin Marshall was returned 27 yards by Demetrius Harris for another score.
"I think it stemmed from practice this week," Berry said. "Everybody had a great practice. The emphasis was on finishing plays and not being too concerned with the score."
The Jets' Matt Forte, who scored three times against the Bills, was held to just 65 yards rushing, while wide receiversBrandon Marshall and Eric Decker were held in check.
But it was Fitzpatrick who was downright dismal a week after torching Buffalo, going 20 of 44 for 188 yards. His six picks tied a franchise record while establishing a career high, surpassing the five that he threw for St. Louis against Minnesota on Dec. 11, 2005.
"I've had some bad ones," he said, "so all I can do is put it behind me and move on."
CHIEFS NOT INFALLIBLE
Kansas City appeared to take a 24-3 lead in the third quarter when Ware stretched the ball into the pylon for a touchdown. But officials reviewed the play and saw the ball beginning to come out, and decided that it was a fumble resulting in a touchback for New York.
"You don't want them dropping the ball," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, "but it's hard to tell them not to stretch."
TURNOVER TROUBLE
Things could have been worse for New York. Berry and Sorenson dropped picks moments before Sorenson hauled in his interception, and Fitzpatrick fell on his own fumble earlier in the game.
PETERS A 'PICKER
It was the second straight two-interception day for Peters, who has quickly become one of the league's top cornerbacks. He had eight as a rookie in the regular season a year ago.
"When things are happening like today," Peters said, "you enjoy. You embrace the opportunities."
DECKER MIA
Decker had his streak of touchdowns in six straight games come to an end. The Jets wide receiver, who has scored 15 times in his last 19 games, had his only catch in the fourth quarter.
MARSHALL PLAYS
Marshall was active after missing practice earlier in the week with a slightly sprained knee. But shadowed by Peters and Berry, the star wide receiver had a tough time getting open. He finished with three catches for 27 yards, on several occasions complaining about the tight coverage.
INJURY REPORT
Jets: CB Darrelle Revis was evaluated for an eye injury and missed the final series of the first half. He returned after the break. ... DL Lawrence Thomas left in the first half with a shoulder injury. ... LB Erin Henderson was inactive because of a foot sprain.
Chiefs: RB Jamaal Charles (ACL surgery) remained inactive for the third straight week, but coach Andy Reid insisted the four-time Pro Bowl selection is getting closer to playing.

Forte scores 3 TDs in leading Jets to 37-31 win over Bills

Matt Forte scored three touchdown runs and Ryan Fitzpatrick finally solved Rex Ryan's defense, leading the New York Jets to a 37-31 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.
Forte's 3-yard run put New York ahead 27-24 with 2:12 left in the third quarter. He sealed the win by patiently waiting for a seam to open before scampering into the end zone from 12 yards to put New York up 37-24 with 4:02 left in the fourth quarter.
Forte finished with 100 yards rushing, and the offseason free-agent addition became the 13th New York player to score three rushing touchdowns in a game.
The Jets (1-1) bounced back from a season-opening loss to Cincinnati and snapped a five-game skid against their AFC East rivals.
Fitzpatrick finished 24 of 34 for 374 yards and a 5-yard touchdown pass toEric Decker.
In beating one of his former teams, Fitzpatrick also overcame the stinging memories of last year's season finale, a 22-17 loss at Buffalo that eliminated the Jets from playoff contention. Fitzpatrick closed the loss by throwing interceptions on each of the Jets final three possessions.
"I think it means a little bit more than a regular game because this was my life for four years being here," Fitzpatrick said about spending 2009-12 with the Bills. "But I'm more excited about our team and the way we responded in the second half."
The Bills (0-2) are suddenly reeling in Ryan's second season as coach , and two years after he has fired by the Jets.
"Obviously, we never expected this," Ryan said. "The Jets were a much better team than we were today, especially their offense against our defense looked like a mismatch today. You look for a difference in the game and that was the difference in the game."
The Bills' offense sputtered in a 13-7 loss at Baltimore on Sunday, and now it was their defense that showed cracks against the Jets.
New York finished with 493 yards offense, 28 first downs and had seven drives cross midfield.
Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor rebounded five days after he was limited to 111 yards passing against the Ravens.
He went 18 of 30 for 298 yards and three touchdowns and an interception. Marquise Goodwin scored on an 84-yarder catch, Greg Salas scored on a 71-yard catch and running back Mike Gillislee made it close, by catching an 18-yard touchdown pass with 1:17 remaining.
The Jets scored on each of their first four possessions to build a 20-7 lead.
The Bills responded by scoring on three straight possessions spanning halftime to go up 24-20. Safety Nickell Robey-Coleman capped the run by returning Jalin Marshall's fumble 36 yards for a touchdown.
GOING DEEP
Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis got off to another tough start. After having difficulty covering Bengals receiver A.J. Green on Sunday, Revis was burned by Goodwin on his 84-yard touchdown catch. Goodwin burst past Revis up the right sideline at midfield and had two steps on him when he caught Tyrod Taylor's pass in stride at the Jets 35 and ran it in.
It was Buffalo's longest touchdown pass at home in team history, and longest since Fitzpatrick hit Terrell Owens for a 98-yard touchdown strike at Tennessee on Nov. 15, 2009.
Adding in Salas' 71-yard TD catch and Taylor became Buffalo's fifth quarterback to throw two 70-plus yard touchdown passes in the same game, and first since J.P. Losman did it in 2006.
FOURTH DOWN
Forte's final touchdown came after the Jets defense stopped the Bills twice for no gain at midfield, including run up the middle by LeSean McCoy on fourth-and-1. The Bills converted 3 of 10 third-down chances and were 1-for-2 on fourth down.
QUICK HEALER
Jets receiver Brandon Marshall proved to be a quick healer. It appeared as if he sustained a serious injury when his left knee twisted beneath him while cornerback Stephon Gilmore brought him down by the facemask in the second quarter. Marshall immediately grabbed his knee and lay on the field for a few minutes before getting up on his own.
Marshall returned for the next series and made a 21-yard catch after having his knee examined. The catch helped set up Decker's 5-yard touchdown catch that put the Jets up 20-7.
INJURIES
Jets: Coach Todd Bowles said Marshall had a slight sprain. WR Quincy Enunwa continued playing despite sore ribs. LBErin Henderson did not return because of a foot injury. OG James Carpenter injured a calf.
Bills: Goodwin left the game late and was being for a potential concussion.
THEY SAID IT:
Fitzpatrick on Marshall returning to field: "I thought he was down for the count, for sure."
Bills LB Jerry Hughes: "We just didn't play good football today. Just bad ball all around. ... We just didn't show up today."
RETIRING NO. 78
The Bills honored NFL career sacks leader and Hall of Famer Bruce Smith by retiring his No. 78 during a halftime ceremony.
"I don't know if I'm worthy or lucky enough for all this," Smith told reporters before the game. He joins Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, whose No. 12, is the only number the Bills have retired.
